The first generation of GTOs was produced from 1964 to 1967. In 1964, the inaugural model saw approximately 32,450 units manufactured. Production peaked with the 1966 model, which recorded around 96,946 units. This high demand reflected the growing interest in performance vehicles during this period. In 1967, numbers began to decline slightly as the automotive landscape started to shift.
The second generation ran from 1968 to 1972. The 1968 GTO saw about 87,120 units produced, while the 1969 model increased to approximately 72,287. The 1970 model year marked a decline, with around 40,000 units made, as manufacturers adapted to changing consumer preferences and stricter regulations on emissions and fuel economy. By 1971, production dropped further to approximately 17,000 units, signaling a significant downturn for the breed. The last year of the second generation, 1972, saw the production of about 5,800 units before the model was discontinued.
In 1973, Pontiac revived the GTO nameplate using a more subdued version, which lasted until 1974. This era saw the production of roughly 4,800 units in 1973 and only about 1,000 in 1974, marking the end of an iconic chapter for the GTO.
